JMK Tests New Ride

From the ABRA Site  http://www.abrahydroplanes.com/ :
JMK Tests New Ride

J Michael Kelly of Auburn, Washington climbed into the cockpit of his new ride, Ted Porter's U -7, for the first time on Saturday morning at Alum Creek Park near Columbus, Ohio and liked what he felt.  "I've been lucky to drive some great boats," said Kelly, "but nothing like this."

Kelly got a lot of seat time in the test session, taking his boat out 4 times.  He also tested his team-mate Jeff Bernard's U-5 twice, subbing for Bernard who was at home in Seattle attending memorial services for his step-father, Terry Troxell.

Kelly impressed his new team by adapting quickly to his new ride.  U-5 crew chief Tom Anderson said, "These guys (Kelly and Bernard)  both know how to get the most out of a raceboat.  It should be a fun season"

Detroit 1991

Hydroplane Racing in Detroit 1946-2008

David D. Williams, Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum Director, has been driving unlimited hydroplanes since 1993. This is his seventh book on the subject of hydroplane racing, and it was published in June, 2009 by Arcadia Publishing

How close did George Stratton really get to the seawall in Detroit in 2000? How high did the E-lam go when JW blew over in front of the DYC in 2005? What did the Gale Jet boat look like and was there really a Miss Pepsi III?

For the answer to these and many more questions, pick up a copy of David Williams' newest book Hydroplane Racing in Detroit 1946 - 2008. At 128 pages with over 220 rare and exciting photos, this book is a bargain for only $21.99.

Hydroplane Racing in Detroit 1946 - 2008, is David's fourth book for Arcadia Publishing and details the post war racing in the Motor City. Williams combed the photo collection of Doug Dossin, Bill Osborne, Sandy Ross and the Hydroplane Museum to find dozens of rare, old photos that had never been published before, to illustrated his carefully researched history of racing in the Motor City.

The book is available now on the Hydroplane Museum website as well as Amazon.com and local book stores in the Detroit area. Also, David's other recent books, "Hydroplane Racing in Seattle", "Turbine Racing in Seattle" and "Turbine Racing in the Tri-Cities" are also available through the Museum.

Walled Lake Thunder II

OK folks!  If you want to have a good time and see some good inboard hydroplane racing, you need to add Walled Lake to your calender for next year. Inboard Hydro owners and racers, you should seriously consider making Walled Lake one of your stops next year.

The setting is nice, the beach/seating area is right next to the pits. You can either set up blankets on the beach or take advantage of the small area of bleacher seating. I had a great afternoon with my kids and wife watching the racing action and having a picnic on the beach. The kids did great until later in the afternoon and at that point it was time to pack it up. Nothing worse than tired and cranky kids. My daughter was sound asleep within 2 minutes of driving home. A good start for both kids considering this was their first race together. Looks like Stony Creek will be another family adventure.

I would personally like to thank Sean Bowsher. Sean graciously adopted me and my son as crew members and we were able to get a close up look at the boats. My son was especially thrilled when he got to sit in Sean's hydro and get his picture taken. I would also like to thank Brian Perkins. He was kind enough to talk hydros and have his photo taken with my son. When I told my son he drove the Navy Unlimited Hydro last year, he couldn't believe it. So, thanks again to both Sean and Brian.

I didn't get a chance to meet up with as many folks as I would've liked. I only went on Sunday so I didn't have the time I needed. Plus, Sunday was a day with my family!  Sorry if I missed you.  The one other person I did meet was John Nebelecky. Nice to meet you John.

I will have photos posted sometime this week. I'll post some on my blog  http://hydronation.blogspot.com/  in some form...individual photos or set up a slide show.

Hope to see many of you at the Gold Cup next month. I can't make it to Quake on the Lake, but Stony Creek is on my schedule. Have a great rest of the Summer racing and entertaining us hydro-holics. Be fast, but more importantly, Be Safe!

Roger

Race Season Approaching Fast

Hello The

Race Season Approaching Fast

If you stop by the Go3 Racing Team shop these days, you won't hear much talking, but lots of grinding, spraying, and scraping. Ed Cooper's (
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=65&Itemid=61 )backyard race shop in eastern Posey County, Indiana is busy at work. Ed and Robert Grossman
spend most days preparing the many parts and pieces of the Allison V-12 engines. The work is long, hard, tedius and back breaking. But, it has to be
done to get the powerful Allison's to produce the 3000 horsepower to compete against the world's fastest hydroplanes on the 2009 ABRA tour.

The Gold Cup and President's Trophy

I went to the DRRA Office on Tuesday to order my seats and parking. While I was there, I got a chance to check out the Trophy Room. Pretty cool! I wish I would've had more time to take photos, but I had both kids with me. They were starting to get into things like it was a 'hands on' museum. I did get a photo of the Gold Cup and the President's Trophy. These are taken with my cellphone.
